JACKET-FLYING, LIGHT ZONE, TYPE L-2A
ORDER NO. AF-19500
The emergence of the jet age in military aviation prompted a need for a new, more modern flight jacket. The L-2 series was the lightweight USAF replacement for the previously bulky, leather flight jackets of the WWII era.
In an effort to differentiate themselves from their former parent, the US ARMY, the USAF turned out the L-2A in USAF Blue. Though widely adored by Airmen around the world, it was short-lived. A downed pilot wearing a blue jacket in the jungle stood out like a sore thumb! And so USAF Sage became the standard with the later L-2B.
Our reproduction starts with nylon fabric, made in the USA and accurately woven for the time. The lining is similarly correct for the period and is a double faced rayon/wool blend. The collar and cuffs are US-made, in 100% wool per the specs of the era. It’s all stitched together with Type I (Soft) nylon thread in size 45 (Gov’t B) just as they would have then.
(Many people assume the AF called out bonded thread, but our research has uncovered evidence to the contrary.)
The pattern of original jackets like this had one major problem for the modern man: they are SHORT. With a nod to the modern physique and today’s fashion, our patterns stay as true to the originals as possible. As Western/American men, we know how to fit the Western/American man, and all patterns are hand-graded by a professional grader, not a computer.
